Paris Saint-Germain: More to Come from the Top of Ligue 1

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), currently leading Ligue 1 and having secured a place in the round of 16 of the Champions League, is set to deliver even greater performances, according to manager Luis Enrique. While a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund granted them qualification, Enrique believes there is room for improvement and anticipates further progress in the coming months. As he stated during a recent news conference, “I don’t have any doubts that we will be better. All my teams have improved as the months have passed. In February, I have no doubt that we will have players back from big injuries, we are open to the transfer window and the chance of bringing in players. So why would I be negative or play the victim? I am an optimist; that is my nature.”

Despite finishing second in Group F behind Dortmund, Enrique expressed his satisfaction with how his team performed in what was considered a challenging group. Alongside AC Milan and Newcastle United, PSG showcased their prowess and emerged as a strong contender. As Enrique highlighted, “If you look at the team statistics, we are leaders in almost every key aspect – possession, chances, expected goals. We are certainly one of the best teams, but in the group stage, we faced teams that you could face in the last-16, quarterfinals, or semifinals. Of course, I am optimistic because this wasn’t a normal Champions League group. It was the most difficult one in the competition. We have managed to qualify.”

Following the draw against Dortmund, Enrique revealed that he had instructed his players to take fewer risks, acknowledging the pressure they faced as Milan was winning against Newcastle. A defeat would have seen PSG eliminated from the competition. However, this conservative approach prompted criticism, particularly from Kylian Mbappé, who demonstrated his frustration on the field. Enrique, understanding the emotions involved, explained, “Of course, I understand the players and I understand they are exposed to emotions when they play. I’m the coach. It was a big decision with Milan winning 2-1 at Newcastle late on. We can take risks by trying to score again. We had to stay fully focused. You can get it wrong in these situations.”

Luis Enrique’s positive attitude and belief in PSG’s capabilities have positioned the team for future success. With the return of injured players and the potential for new signings during the transfer window, PSG aims to strengthen its ranks further. While the team faced formidable opponents in the group stage, their ability to qualify demonstrates their resilience and determination. As the Ligue 1 leaders continue to hone their skills and improve, they assert themselves as one of the best teams in Europe. The road to glory may be challenging, but PSG’s continued progress under Enrique’s guidance promises an exciting future for the club.
